Jesus & Image: Lesson 1

Dear Parents,

Hello! To remind you, we’ve just embarked on a four-week journey to discover how our image relates to our walk with Christ. This week’s lesson was a great time of fellowship and learning. I hope your student enjoyed it.

This week, the lesson was entitled “Image is Everything,” and it focused on helping students understand how our culture is obsessed with creating an image, or a brand, that we project to the world. The problem is, of course, that our image-controlling tendencies get in the way of using our lives to reflect Christ in the world. We looked at how damaging hanging onto a me-focused image can be and instead of projecting a Christ-centered image.

We looked at the following Scripture passages:
  •  John 3:27-30
  • Mark 8:34-38
You’ll enjoy reading these great scriptures and seeing how important it is to consider how we’re using our lives to bring glory to God.

Next Steps...
During the next week as you have time to talk with your teen, consider asking the following questions:
  • You talked about the images that people project that won’t last. What are some of the ways you’ve seen people you know demonstrate this?
  • Jesus says that to save your life you must lose it. How is that possible?
  • How have you begun to think about the image you project? Are there some aspects of our image that we try to spin and control without even knowing it?
  • What can we as a family do to create an atmosphere where our lives are used to make Jesus known to the world?
We are glad your family is a part of North Side. If you have questions about anything, please don’t hesitate to call us.

-Jim & Eric

Service: Lesson 3

Dear Parents,

This week we completed our three-week series on service. Your teenager has hopefully been challenged to not just do service but to live a life of service. The students have really gone deep into the bible and discussed what it means to live every day in service to others.

This week, the lesson was entitled “Living as a Faithful Servant.” Your teenager learned that, in the Kingdom of God, to be the greatest means to be a servant. He or she was encouraged to think of practical ways to show God’s love to others.

We looked at the following Scripture passages:
  • Mark 10:35-45
  • Matthew 23:11-12
  • Philippians 2:14-18
  • 1 Corinthians 9:19-23
I encourage you to read these verses and talk with your teenager about them.

Next Steps...
During the next week as you have time to talk with your teenager, consider asking the following questions:

  • Why do you think God views those who serve as “the greatest”? Can you think of some examples from the Bible where we see this?
  • What surprised you about this week’s lesson?
  • How can I be a helpful role model in demonstrating this life of service? What are some ways we as a family can model service more in our lives?
Thank you for supporting our ministry and for choosing to make time to engage your child in his or her spiritual growth.

Service: Lesson 2

Dear Parents,

Hey there! We’ve finished week two of our study on service, and only have one more week to go. I hope that your student has had as much fun as I have had exploring what it means to be a servant.

This week, the lesson was entitled “The Servant Who Suffered.” Your student learned that Jesus was the ultimate example of what a servant should be, and that He modeled the attitudes we should have. We challenged the students to see service as one of the defining marks of their identities as Christ-followers.

We looked at the following Scripture passages:
  • Isaiah 53:3-5
  • Philippians 2:5-8
  • John 13:1-16
  • John 15:12-13
I encourage you to read these verses and talk with your student about them.

Next Steps...
During the next week as you have time to talk with your teenager, consider asking the following questions:

  • Did you realize how much Jesus gave up for us? Describe some of what he gave up in your own words.
  • What was something new you learned about Jesus and how He modeled a servant’s heart?
  • What is something you can do to follow this example? How can I help you do that?

Thank you for supporting our ministry and for choosing to make time to engage your child in his or her spiritual growth. Look for one another Parent Page from me next week.

Service: Lesson 1

Dear Parents,

I just wanted to send you a quick note to remind you that we’ve started our three-week study on service. This study is amazing, and I know it will help your teenager live out his or her faith in practical ways. It’s coming at a great time as our church and HSM is focusing on missions with the “Compassion Experience” (March 24-27) and the HSM “Love Parker County” Project (April 9). And then we begin our focus to prepare for the Chicago mission trip this summer with our Breaking Free Youth Choir practices beginning and parent info meeting on Chicago (March 26).

This week’s lesson was entitled “Life-Changing Service.” The lesson helped students see that the heart of service is seen in God’s desire to provide for us, His children. Students were challenged to understand that they are called to serve others, and to evaluate their attitudes toward serving.

We looked at the following Scripture passages:
  • Psalm 23
  • Deuteronomy 15:7-11
  • 1 John 3:17-19
  • 1 Peter 4:10-11
If you get a chance, consider reading these passages as well, so that you have some context for following up with your teenager.

Next Steps...
During the next week as you have time to talk with your teenager, consider asking the following questions:
  • What is something that surprised you during the lesson this past week?
  • How does God’s view of people differ from your view of them?
  • Did you realize how much God loves you, and loves other people?
  • How can I pray for you, particularly as it applies to you relationship with God?

Thank you for supporting our ministry and for choosing to make time to engage your child in his or her spiritual growth. Look for another Parent Page from me soon.

Jesus & Stuff: Lesson 4

Dear Parents,

Hello! We just finished our four-lesson study on what Jesus had to say about our stuff. This week, the lesson was titled “God’s Stuff, Not Ours.” In this lesson, we helped students learn that we have to learn to see our stuff as God’s, not ours, to be used as He sees fit, and we challenged them to commit to viewing all their possessions with a spirit of sacrifice, understanding that we only have what we have because God chose to give it to them.

We looked at the following Scripture passage:
  • Mark 12:41-44
Please take a few minutes this week to read this passage.

Next Steps...

During the next week as you have time to talk with your teenager, remember that one way that will help him or her to understand and apply what he or she has learned is to explain it to someone else. Use the following questions to guide your conversation:
  • Why is it easy to get really possessive about our stuff?
  • Why is it so important in your mind for us to see our stuff as God’s to do with as He pleases?
  • Is there anything we own that could do more for God’s Kingdom than it is for us? What would it take for us to donate or otherwise do without to see people know God in a better way?

Jesus & Stuff: Lesson 3

Dear Parents,

Hello! We just finished the third of four lessons on what Jesus had to say about our stuff. This week, the lesson was titled “Less Is More.” In this lesson, we helped students learn no that matter how much stuff we have, it doesn’t add any real meaning to our life, and we challenged them to accept the challenge to see what stuff they can do without and consider donating it to someone who is needy.

We looked at the following Scripture passage:
  • Luke 12:13-21
Please take a few minutes this week to read this passage.

Next Steps...

During the next week as you have time to talk with your teenager, remember that one way that will help him or her to understand and apply what he or she has learned is to explain it to someone else. Use the following questions to guide your conversation:
  • Why is it easy for us to get caught up in the lie that more stuff equals a more fulfilling life?
  • Where in the world around us do you see this message being pushed?
  • As a family, do we have a tendency to fall into this trap? Or do you think we handle it pretty well?
  • Jesus is the only eternally lasting and eternally meaningful thing in our lives. How are you doing in your relationship with Him? Do you feel pretty close to Him right now? Or a little distant? Can I help you with anything?

Jesus & Stuff: Lesson 2

Dear Parents,

Hello! We just wrapped up the second of four lessons on what Jesus had to say about our stuff. This week, the lesson was titled “Follow Me, But Leave Your Stuff.” In this lesson, we helped students learn that if our love for our stuff comes between our devotion to God, we’re doing it all wrong, and we challenged them to honestly evaluate whether or not their love for their stuff competes with their devotion to Christ.

We looked at the following Scripture passage:
  • Mark 10:17-27
Please take a few minutes this week to read this passage.

Next Steps...
During the next week as you have time to talk with your teenager, remember that one way that will help him or her to understand and apply what he or she has learned is to explain it to someone else. Use the following questions to guide your conversation:
  • Why was the story of the rich young ruler a sad story?
  • How did this lesson make you feel? Did you realize that you had some attitudes about your stuff that may be coming in between you following Christ? Or do you think you’re OK in this area of your life?
  • Is anything in your life coming between you and following Christ? If Jesus was talking to you or me instead of the rich young man, what would He tell us to give up, I wonder?
